Greetings Elementary School District 159 family's employees Scholars and Community happy Black History Month historically black colleges and universities also known as HBCUs have played a vital role in enriching the I'm not just African-Americans but our entire country this special Black History Month recognition will honor and celebrate these historic educational institutions this month we will highlight dorkly black colleges and University and their significance in educating nurturing and creating countless successful people throughout history each day we will highlight and historic HBCUs grass on our social media platform we will also acknowledge our District employees who attended HBCUs parents will receive it via email a powerful PowerPoint presentation 29 days of hbcus which can be shared with the family to further discussion of the importance of these educational institutions back by popular demand is the Sankofa enrichment experience program this culturally enriching program begins the week of February 5th at 4 Marya Yates and see them Prairie Elementary School Scholars register your Scholars as soon as possible to ensure that they attended 8 lunchtime uplifting affirmation program on February 7th we will recognize African-American sororities and fraternities by providing our Scholars with lunch time Divine 9 informational session sharing the history purpose and contribution the organizations have made to society community members are invited to participate by completing the sign up form sent via email ours scholars are invited to join us on February 14th as we host Greek colors day where we will represent our favorite sorority or fraternity by wearing their colors everyone is invited to be a part of this special day Real Men read day is Thursday February 22nd and I would like to thank the men from our community who have volunteered to participate in this amazing event by reading stories to our Elementary School Scholars HBCU teacher day is Wednesday February 21st Scholars may join us and wearing an HBCU t-shirts represent their parents or the school of their choice a flyer with a link to purchase t-shirt will be sent to parents via email I would like to congratulate our second quarter Scholars of the month star recipient and special recognition recipents are Awards assembly will be held on Thursday February 8th at Colin Powell Middle School the program begins at 6 p.m. a special thank you to our teaching learning and accountability team for hosting the district-wide steam Fair last month there was a great turnout we would also like to congratulate our Scholars on a job well done mark your calendars February 7th is a committee of the whole meeting at 6:30 p.m. February 16th parent teacher conferences there's no school for Scholars February 19th its Presidents Day there is also no school for Scholars February 21st the Board of Education meeting at 6:30 p.m. please join us as always we are grateful for the support of our parents our staff and Community as we continue to thrive and 159
