Curriculum and Academic Expectations |

| We believe that all children
can learn and be successful in their school experience.
District 159 follows a curriculum which focuses on student outcomes and
standards for each grade level. The professional staff, i n concert
with community volunteers, has developed a District curriculum which meets
all of the requirements of the State of Illinois and includes additional
areas important to our community. District 159 regularly reviews and
revises curriculum content and materials. We view curriculum and
student academic expectations as a process which needs constant adjustment
to meet the pupils' needs and prepare them for the future. We subscribe to high pupil expectations. Each teacher regularly evaluates pupils to determine if the subject content presents a sufficient challenge for the child to encourage growth and optimum development. The academic expectations listed here are benchmarks which identify pupil outcomes for their grade level. These expectations represent skills that children should accomplish at the conclusion of the school year. These academic expectations represent minimum target outcomes. Each child progresses at his/her own ability level, and in many instances, will surpass these expectations, or will develop a much broader understanding and application of these sills than the basic goal requirements. Your child's classroom teacher can explain in greater detail the instructional goals and time, scope and sequence which will be followed in your child's classroom in order to accomplish these academic expectations. Individual pupil progress is charted on a regular basis and instructional programs are adjusted to help children grow and succeed. Our experience has indicated that while broad goals and expectations must be established, each child must be viewed as an individual and the academic program and expectations need to be tailored to the individual. We believe that a child will only be successful in his/her school experience if parents/ guardians participate in their education. A partnership between home, community, and school is essential for tan effective educational experience for children. We encourage families to be active in their child's school and to regularly monitor his/her academic progress. Research shows that a parent's interest and support for a child are key motivators for the child's success and accomplishments. Character Education District 159 believes that we must prepare our children to be responsible citizens. Character education is an important part of our mission. Character education addresses the values that parents, community members, teachers, administrators and support staff bring to our school community. Children model adult behaviors. We are committed to creating a school community which has respect for self, others, and cultural diversity. Our school community also creates responsible citizens who respect individual rights and understand community and family values. |
